Home runs by Joey Dukeminier and Dusty Gilbreth helped the Sox take down the Tar Heels on Sunday by an 11-2 score for their first National League win. Ernesto Sosa allowed just two runs in seven innings, and Calen Hinrichs closed the game with two scoreless innings.
All was quiet until the bottom of the third, when the Sox struck and immediately opened up the game with a seven-run frame. Ryan Alexander led off with a line drive double over the head of the Heels left fielder and was quickly driven in by Sosa on a single to left. After a grounder moved courtesy runner Gustavo Zaragoza to third, a walk and two straight singles by Gilbreth and Matt Hartwell put the Sox up 3-0. Hinrichs promptly took a pitch on the back to load the bases, and then Dukeminier cashed in with a grand slam for his first hit of the young season, capping the onslaught.
The Heels chalked up a pair of runs in the fourth, but Sosa quickly squashed the rally. The Sox continued to tack on insurance runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Gilbreth found the trees in the seventh for a two-run shot, rounding off a four-hit, three-RBI day, then started the game-ending 5-4-3 double play in the ninth.
The Sox return to action with a Friday night matchup against the Reds. First pitch is at 7:45 at Osborne.
