Sox Take Loss in National League Opener

After two consecutive rainouts, the Blue Sox finally opened their season against a perennial powerhouse in the Atlanta Reds on Friday night at the Peachtree Charter turf fields. The Reds walked away with an 8-1 win, as the Sox fumbled through their National League debut.

Jakub Izold, Drew Robbins, Blake Burkett, and Chase Harrington all saw the mound in the contest, striking out a combined 11 hitters, but also walking nine. Two errors helped add to the deficit, as the Reds capitalized on the Sox miscues. Reds starter Jamie Sexton tossed seven strong innings, and the final six Sox hitters went down in order via the strikeout as the bullpen took over.

The Sox scattered five singles through the night, including one off the broken bat of rookie Zach Moon in the bottom of the fourth. A Dusty Gilbreth ground ball plated Matt Hartwell for the squad’s lone run in the fifth. Hartwell also stole a base later in the night but was unable to come around again.

The Sox look to get into the win column against their former American League rival Dirtbags on Sunday at Berkmar. First pitch is scheduled for 4 PM.
